Roberto J. Gonzalez is Deputy General Counsel at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where he provides legal advice to the Secretary and senior officials on a variety of topics, including financial regulation, domestic finance, sanctions, and anti-money laundering.   Previously he served for three years at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, where he was Principal Deputy General Counsel and responsible for advising on the Bureau’s authorities and its rulemaking, supervisory, and enforcement actions.   He previously was Associate White House Counsel and Special Assistant to the President from 2009 – 2011, where he advised the National Economic Council and was the primary legal liaison to Treasury, the Department of Homeland Security, and other agencies.  Before entering government, he practiced appellate and general litigation at WilmerHale, LLP in Washington, DC.   Mr. Gonzalez clerked for Justice John Paul Stevens on the U.S. Supreme Court and for Judge Guido Calabresi on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.  He graduated from Stanford Law School and Duke University.
