Anyone with a degree in science or engineering
(or sometimes, the equivalent) can take the Patent Office Exam to become a patent agent or patent attorney. Patent law is a field of challenging and ever-changing opportunities. Be at the forefront of innovation . . . lead at the forefront of innovation.

PLI’s now-proven steps to success on the Exam:

  • Unique, interactive, diagnostic software that replicates what you’re going to find when you sit down to take the computer-based Exam.
  • Fully updated materials, lectures and questions for the Patent Office materials now being tested.
  • New online features available only to our customers: Compare your performance on practice questions with others taking our course. (You’ll know from the beginning whether you are on track to pass the Exam).

The Patent Office Registration Exam is computer-based and on-demand. But it is still a grueling test of very picky details. And the PTO has been more aggressive, testing the latest materials and some old topics more rigorously.

PLI’s Patent Office Registration Exam Course is still the best way to prepare to pass the test. When your future is riding on the results, you need a course that delivers. PLI has been doing that longer than ANYONE else in the business. We have more people passing the Exam than anyone, and they give us up-to-the-minute feedback.

In clear, concise, right-to-the-point language, this information-packed course leads you through the intricacies — and around the traps — of the Patent Office Exam. You’ll get the hard facts, test-taking tips, sample questions and answers, and intense practice exams that mirror what you’re going to face when you sit down to take the real thing. Our PatWare® software almost exactly predicted the current format of the Exam by many years. PatWare® has now been expanded, updated and Web-connected to play an even more critical and informative role in your preparation.

Whether you choose to attend a live course or study at home, from the very first hour of the course you’ll benefit from our Exam-focused approach. There’s just one reason PLI is the essential PTO Exam resource: It is simply the most user-friendly, comprehensive, in-depth, authoritative, interactive and Exam-focused course available today.

Order your course now, even if you’re going to attend a live course later on. Advance preparation is the key to success.

PLI’s Exam Preparation Calendar

The one-day Exam can be scheduled more or less at your convenience. It’s finding the right time to study for the Exam that should be your primary focus.

STEP 1. You’re going to need about 200 hours (we’d suggest one month of full-time study, or two months of part-time study) to prepare for the Exam. Pull out your calendar and see where you can find that month or two in the coming year.

STEP 2. Download the PTO Exam application and start to get your application in order.

STEP 3. Look to see whether one of our live courses falls within your projected study time. If not, or if you just prefer a homestudy course, plan to register for the online homestudy course. Order your preferred course at least a week before your 200-hour study time starts, and start to study as soon as it arrives (even if you’re coming to a live course later).

OR . . . If you feel that a live course is essential, plan your Exam date by figuring how long it will take you to fit in another 100 hours of preparation after the last day of your preferred live course.

STEP 4. Send off your PTO Exam application about 2-4 weeks before you finish your preparation.

STEP 5. Start planning your celebration for passing the Exam!

Our course covers EVERYTHING you need to know to pass the Exam the first time! Including:

  • The America Invents Act
  • New material recently added to the Exam from the America Invents Act
  • The Bilski, KSR and 112 guidelines added to the Exam in 2011
  • Patentability (35 USC 101, 102, 103 & 112; MPEP 2100)
  • Priority: Domestic and Foreign (35 USC 119)
  • Assignments and Ownership
  • Ethics (37 CFR Part 10)
  • Correspondence with the USPTO (MPEP 500)
  • Patent Applications (MPEP 600)
  • Responses and Amendments (MPEP 700)
  • Abandonment and Revival
  • Double Patenting and Restriction (MPEP 800)
  • Appeals (MPEP 1200)
  • Corrections of Patents (MPEP 1400)
  • Design Patents (MPEP 1500)
  • Plant Patents
  • Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) and International Filings (MPEP 1800)
  • Citation of Prior Art and Reexamination (MPEP 2200)
  • Interference Practice

And we’ll keep you updated on the testable materials added to the Exam until you pass.

Special emphasis is placed on the duty owed by the attorney or agent to the PTO and to the client and how the Rules of Conduct resolve these issues. Ethical advertising and fee sharing is also covered both in lecture form and in exam question review. The practice distinction between attorney work and agent work is also covered.

This session on ethics and representation of others before the Patent Office begins with a review of the nature of the relationship between the attorney and the client. The session continues with fictional representational and ethical scenarios where the result of an ethical choice is explained in accordance with the relevant rules. The final issue is special rule 11.18(b), which covers attorneys as well as clients and anyone else who makes representations in writing before the PTO.

"I passed on my first try! The PLI course was excellent! I felt very prepared going into the exam. Also, John was so helpful in answering my many, many emails when I had questions about the material and the exam. I felt fully supported the whole way through!”
Raven Zeer, Chicago-Kent College of Law; passed the Exam in October 2017

"PLI made studying for the exam easy. The materials provided were top notch and very easy to follow.  PLI gave me all the tools to pass the exam in one try."
. George T. Fishback, University of Texas School of Law; passed the Exam in July 2017

"PLI was great! ...The well-written study materials and on-point videos efficiently introduced me to the subject matter of each MPEP chapter, and the myriad questions in Patware helped me to master the material. After three weeks of full-time studying and taking practice exams, I was ready. Preparing for this test isn't easy, but PLI makes it as easy as it can be."
Camron Bagheri, University of Pennsylvania Law School; passed the Exam in January 2018

"The patent exam is quite a challenge. One has to both know the core material and learn how to search. The MPEP has more than 3,000 pages, and different law/rules apply at different periods of time. The PLI Patent Office Exam Course was extremely valuable to me because it makes learning much more efficient. The course identifies and teaches the core material, and updates the practice exams based on the new law. Finally, whenever I had a question I could not find out the answer, John always replied to my question to give a concise explanation."
Bin Wang, Booth Udall Fuller, PLC; passed the Exam in October 2017

"Your course was fantastic.  Despite having practiced in Canada for over 15 years, and being a 'reciprocal' US agent through my Canadian agency status, and through that time doing a lot of US filings, I likely would not have passed without your course.  The focus on the tested material was very much appreciated.... Your course, and the practice exams, were a significant contributor to my ability to pass the exam.”
Charles Boulakia, partner, Ridout & Maybee LLP; passed the Exam in July 2017

“PLI's Patent Office Exam Course was key to my passing the examination for registration to practice before the USPTO, otherwise known as the 'Patent Bar' exam.  I took the online version of the course so that I could more flexibly incorporate the course work and study into my daily schedule.  The combination of video classes, hard copy materials, and practice exams helped keep the coursework interesting and understandable.  PLI also provided updated course material and updated practice questions to incorporate applicable changes in patent laws and regulations.  These additional materials - supplied promptly online or through email attachments - were also key to my absorbing new material and successfully applying the material to exam questions.  Although I took the online PLI course, I was still able to submit the occasional question to the instructors, who always responded within a couple of days.  The instructors also provided various test-taking tips such as how much time to spend on questions and so forth, and these tips were helpful.  I recommend the PLI Patent Office Exam Course to others who are considering taking the 'Patent Bar' exam."
Bruce Villard, J.D., Northrop Grumman; passed the exam in June 2017.

“The PLI course was terrific. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone taking the exam. After completing the course I felt very well prepared and was able to pass the exam on my first try.”
Caroline Herald, NYU School of law; passed the Exam in September 2017

“There was nothing about the course which was not useful -- including the interesting little anecdotes which Gene and John told during the course or in the videos. Those anecdotes were relevant to a few of the questions. There was nothing that the course missed, and no question for which I felt unprepared....The advice for taking the exam was on point."
Joachim Martillo, owner, Min Risk Software; passed the Exam in September 2017

PLI Patent Office Exam Homestudy Course was the sole resource for my USPTO Registration Exam preparation. The online and written materials of the course cover every aspect of the exam. The Patware is a remarkable web tool that provides the real exam experience. By the time I took the exam, I was already very familiar with how to navigate through the MPEP chapters, which saved me a lot of time. Long story short, I cannot imagine passing the Registration Exam without the PLI Patent Office Exam Course. I want to thank all PLI staff and especially John White and Gene Quinn for making this outstanding course available for scientists and engineers who want to pursue a career in patent practice.”
Tufan Gokirmak, Ph.D., Thermo Fischer Scientific; passed the Exam in October 2017

"I was nervous about taking the patent bar exam before law school, but I made the decision to use the PLI homestudy course to prepare. PLI took me from having no patent law or legal background to passing the exam on my first try. The Patware software gave me thorough experience taking the test before test day, so I was confident going through the exam."

Lucas Yordy, Vanderbilt Law School; passed the Exam in April 2018

"PLI has a focused and organized course that gives you the best chance of passing on the first try- like I did!”

Alex Salmu, Faurecia, Senior Patent Engineer; Thomas M. Cooley Law School; passed the Exam in February 2018

"There is no other program like this out there and I am so glad I used PLI to achieve success. I would recommend it to anyone wishing to pass the USPRE because it is a great investment in your career and future."

Bamidele Johnson, Howard University School of Law; Passed the exam in January 2018.

"When I contemplated taking the patent bar exam, I asked several patent agents and attorneys on how to study for it. Unanimously, they said to sign up for the PLI course. Heeding their advice, I signed up to the PLI home study course. I followed the instruction and the study schedule and passed the patent bar exam on first try.

The reading material is concise and easily digestible, which is particularly important as I do not possess prior experience working in a law firm or with patenting. The webinars taught by Gene and John are both informative and lively. John's anecdotes and Gene's dry sense of humor are  also much appreciated.  The software, Patware, and the practice questions compiled by PLI precisely mimic the difficulty and scope of the actual exam. If anyone  is struggling with studying for the patent bar exam, PLI is the way to go."

Chun Shi Lin, Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Salk Institute of Biological Sciences; passed the Exam in December 2017

“I had put off taking the test for 10+ years, and now I wish I hadn’t, because to be honest it wasn’t all that hard with the proper preparation."

Amy Wells, Paralegal, Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP; passed the Exam in March 2018

“I have been practicing intellectual property litigation for the past eight years at a large NY firm, and recently decided to finally go ahead and take the patent bar exam to further my practice in front of the PTAB. It’s been quite a long time since I’ve taken an exam, and because I am a litigator, I was not particularly familiar with many of the PTO practices on which the patent bar would test. My firm strongly supports us taking the USPTO exam, and suggests taking the PLI Patent Office Exam Course specifically (and will pay for us to do so). I was incredibly happy that I took the course! The lectures were more than simply informative; the way they repeat key concepts again and again really gets the information into your head. The practice questions were appropriately difficult, and made the exam itself feel much easier by comparison. The supporting study materials were also extremely helpful, particularly the final section that distilled those highly-tested specifics into easily-remembered lists ....In short, I would highly recommend taking the PLI Patent Office Exam Course before taking the patent bar, both for new and experienced practitioners. Without a doubt, it made a tremendous difference and kept me to an intensive study schedule. Thank you!”

Rachael Bacha, passed the Exam in March 2018

“PLI’s Patent Office Exam Course gave me all the tools necessary to pass the patent exam. John White and Eugene Quinn provided me with an organized and systematic approach to chip away at what seemed like a mountain of material. I trusted in their process and did exactly what they told me to do. I found myself understanding and recalling the material, which eased my nerves and built my confidence.

Patware was also an invaluable tool in preparing for the patent exam. There were more than enough practice tests and quizzes to get me really comfortable with the material and format of the test. I was able to gauge my progress throughout my studies and determine my preparedness to sit for the exam. Patware includes explanations for the correct answers which helped me to recognize key facts and review important concepts. PLI is the key to success for the patent exam!"

Lindsey Ajubita, Loyola University College of Law; passed the Exam in December 2017

“The PLI Patent Course was fantastic. I can say I walked into the exam feeling super prepared for all the tricks, and curve balls. In fact I had several questions on my actual exam that were in PLI materials. I did all of the PLI practice questions and exams, and most importantly I reviewed the questions I got correct and incorrect. Certain concepts were drilled into my head such that I did not need to waste time looking them up. In sum, listen to John White and Gene Quinn, do all the questions PLI gives you, review the correct and incorrect answers, register for exam and pass. Super happy that the beast of an exam is behind me and GLAD I trusted the PLI process.”

Ulysses Williams III, Esq., Howard University School of Law; passed the Exam in March 2018

“The PLI team is terrific.  I found the live course and post-course test prep to be very helpful, and felt confident and prepared on test day.  The study material was comprehensive but streamlined, and made for efficient self-guided study.  I highly recommend PLI to aspiring patent agents.”
