Michael F. McGowan leads Stroz Friedberg’s AML and Compliance Technology Assurance services. He has been at the forefront of applying digital forensic, statistical analysis, and investigative skills to resolve questions involving electronic data for over 12 years.

Companies grappling with complex system and data issues have turned to Mr. McGowan to determine the root causes, oversee robust remediation efforts, and provide strategic advice about strengthening controls to guard against future lapses. He is experienced in analyzing money laundering and sanctions risks in many developed and emerging markets. He is familiar with navigating challenging data privacy frameworks and has successfully led project teams into China, Pakistan, South Korea, and Israel for extended durations.

Mr. McGowan is a sought-after consultant and expert witness. He is regularly called on to brief executives, auditors, boards of directors and regulators. He has testified on numerous occasions from being selected as the government’s expert witness in the Enron Barge trial at age 23 to testifying on behalf of Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg about the results of his forensic analysis that demonstrated that documents produced by an individual claiming to own half of Facebook were not authentic.

Mr. McGowan holds a B.A. in Economics and Statistics from the University of Chicago, where his studies included researching methods of drawing statistical observations in cases of missing data and making graphical representations of multivariate data. Mr. McGowan is a Certified Information Systems Auditor and an EnCase Certified Forensic Examiner.
