Kristin Smith is a Vice President & Associate General Counsel in the MetLife Law Department. As head of the Bank Holding Company and M&A Unit, she manages a team of lawyers providing legal services and support in connection with mergers, acquisitions and dispositions.  She also advises on legal and regulatory issues related to MetLife’s designation and status as a nonbank SIFI.

Previously, Kristin was Vice President in MetLife’s Federal Government and Industry Relations office in Washington, D.C., where she was responsible for representing the company before federal legislators and regulators on financial services, privacy, and MetLife Auto & Home issues.  Kristin joined MetLife in 2004 as senior counsel in the Law Department where she worked on issues related to MetLife’s status as a financial holding company (including managing MetLife’s regulatory relationship with the Federal Reserve) and MetLife Bank, as well as insurance regulation and merger and acquisition activities.

Prior to joining MetLife, Kristin worked at the U.S. Treasury Department from 2002-2004, most recently in the role of Director of the Office of Financial Education.  Kristin also served as a Policy Analyst in offices reporting to Treasury’s Assistant Secretary for Financial Institutions.

From 1998-2002, Kristin was an associate in the Financial Institutions Regulatory Practice at the law firm of Mayer Brown.  Prior to that, she served as an attorney and Secretary of the New York State Banking Board with the New York State Banking Department.

Kristin holds a B.S. in Finance from Penn State University and a J.D. from University of California, Hastings College of the Law.
