Karl Ashanti is an Assistant Corporation Counsel of the Office of the Corporation Counsel of the City of New York, also known as the New York City Law Department. Mr. Ashanti serves as lead counsel for a large caseload of federal actions filed pursuant to 42 U.S.C. § 1983, in which plaintiffs allege that their civil and constitutional rights have been violated.  In this capacity, Mr. Ashanti handles a variety of federal § 1983 lawsuits from the pleadings stage through jury verdicts at trial, ranging from narcotics-related search warrant execution cases to wrongful conviction cases to wrongful death cases to shooting cases.  During the course of his seven years at the Law Department, Mr. Ashanti has appeared as defense counsel in dozens of mediations, of which all but two have resulted in settlements.  Prior to this position, he worked in private practice as a civil litigator both as defense counsel and plaintiff’s counsel, handling matters ranging from insurance defense to commercial disputes to personal injury.  Mr. Ashanti is a graduate of Stanford University and the Georgetown University Law Center, where he served as Notes Editor for the Georgetown International Environmental Law Review, focusing on issues such as brownfields pollution and remediation, and as a clinic attorney-intern for the immigration law clinic, successfully obtaining political asylum on behalf of a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  During law school, he also worked part-time for the United States Department of Labor, assisting in the drafting of federal regulations concerning the implementation by various states of federally mandated health-care related labor laws including the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act, also known as “HIPAA.”
