Jonathan Gifford is a senior attorney focusing on tax matters in the New York office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP.

Mr. Gifford  advises financial institutions, corporations, and private equity firms on U.S. federal income tax matters, including tax controversies and a variety of domestic and internal transactions such mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and capital markets offerings.  

Mr. Gifford joined Cleary in 2006 and became a senior attorney in 2013.  He received a J.D. degree in 2005 from Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, a Kent Scholar, and an editor of the Columbia Law Review.  From 2005 to 2006, he served as law clerk to the Honorable Carol B. Amon of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. From 2008 to 2009 he served as law clerk to the Honorable Sonia Sotomayor on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He received his undergraduate degree from Brown University, magna cum laude, in 1992.
