Jason S. Buttura is currently in-house counsel at Cisco Systems, Inc., where he is the lead attorney on all Open Source licensing issues for the world's #1 networking technology company. As Cisco’s primary Open Source licensing subject matter expert, Mr. Buttura focuses extensively on the formation and management of open source projects and consortiums, participation in existing open projects and standards organizations, drafting and negotiating supplier and customer agreements, advising on copyright law and IP infringement matters, developing remediation plans for Open Source compliance issues at all stages of product development, counseling during M&A transactions, and creating and delivering training and education programs to legal, engineering, sales, partner, and customer audiences. Mr. Buttura also spends time on non-Open Source matters, including other IP and software licensing issues, SaaS transactions, complex software innovation programs, and serving as the product attorney for Cisco’s cable routing business unit. For his work at Cisco, Mr. Buttura has won Cisco Pioneer and Legal Barbarian awards.

Before Cisco, Mr. Buttura was the Senior Intellectual Property Analyst at Wind River Systems, Inc., an embedded software subsidiary of Intel, Inc. At Wind River, Mr. Buttura worked on a wide range of software licensing and Open Source issues, including designing and implementing IP due diligence processes, evaluating products for Open Source and commercial license compliance, working closely with engineering teams to resolve potential IP problems, and developing and testing new Open Source management tools, including writing source code scan algorithms. During his time at Wind River, Mr. Buttura studied ‘C Programming’ at UC Berkeley Ext., earning a 4.0 GPA while working full-time.

Mr. Buttura is a graduate with honors from Syracuse University (B.A., 2004) and Northeastern University School of Law (J.D., 2008).  At Northeastern, Mr. Buttura participated in the Cooperative Legal Education Program, alternating quarters between academic study and working full-time in real legal environments. During the program, Mr. Buttura worked for a private litigation firm, The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts writing briefs in federal litigation and appellate matters, and the Honorable Claudia Wilken of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, writing orders resolving motions before the court, including cases on trademark infringement (Neilmed v. Med-Systems, 472 F. Supp. 2d 1178 (N.D. Cal. 2007); 81 U.S.P.Q. 2d 1598), cable franchise contracts (City of Oakland v. Comcast, 2007 WL 518868), and multi-district litigation (Schultz v. AstraZeneca, 2006 WL 3797932).  Mr. Buttura was also a Constitutional Law Teaching Assistant and co-founded and served as President of the Northeastern Law Entertainment & Sports Law Society.

Mr. Buttura is an author and presenter for the Practising Law Institute’s Intellectual Property License and Open Source programs, and has spoken at the Association for Corporate Counsel and many Linux Foundation events. Mr. Buttura is also a board member of the OpenChain Project and contributor to the SPDX Legal Team, Linux Foundation initiatives to drive standardization of open source data and best practices throughout the software supply chain. Mr. Buttura has been a member of the State Bar of California since 2008.
