James R. DeVita

James R. DeVita is a partner in the New York office of Schoeman, Updike & Kaufman, LLP. His practice includes White Collar Defense and Government Investigations. He has represented corporations large and small, as well as individuals, including lawyers, accountants and other professionals, in various contexts and cases. He has participated in internal investigations both as company counsel and as counsel for individuals. From 1981 to 1989, he was an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and for part of that time headed the branch office in White Plains, New York. As an Assistant United States Attorney, he participated in the prosecution of United States v. Sun Myung Moon and was the lead prosecutor in United States v. Leona Helmsley.  More recently, he served as co-counsel to L. Dennis Kozlowski, former CEO of Tyco International Ltd, in the trial of People v. L. Dennis Kozlowski, and represented one of the former KPMG accountants against whom all charges were dismissed in the case of United States v. Stein.
