DANIEL M. BURSTEIN serves as Acting Chief of Staff and Executive Deputy Superintendent for the New York State Department of Financial Services. As Acting Chief of Staff, Mr. Burstein oversees large enforcement actions and directs the operations of the Department, with its 1,400 employees, $240 million annual operating budget, and 3,800 supervised financial institutions with assets totaling more than $7 trillion. As Executive Deputy Superintendent, Mr. Burstein heads the Real Estate Finance Division, which is responsible for regulating real estate and homeowner issues, as well as such financial services as title insurance and mortgage insurance. Mr. Burstein's recent projects for the Department include review of non-bank mortgage servicers, licensing of title insurance agents, overhaul of the Mortgage Banking Division’s licensing process, and Superstorm Sandy recovery. Mr. Burstein is also an adjunct professor of financial regulation at Cardozo School of Law. He was previously a litigator at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP. Mr. Burstein graduated from Columbia University in 2000 and magna cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 2004.
