Chris Peterson is the John J. Flynn Endowed Professor of Law at the University of Utah where he teaches courses on commercial law, consumer protection, contracts. Professor Peterson also currently serves as a Special Advisor to Richard Cordray, the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Prior to this, he was a Special Advisor to the Office of Legal Policy for Personnel and Readiness in the United States Department of Defense where he advised Pentagon officials on consumer finance issues facing military service members. He also served as Senior Counsel for Enforcement Policy and Strategy in the CFPB’s Office of Enforcement where he led issue teams dealing with payday loans and deposit accounts. Professor Peterson has written extensively on consumer finance law. His books include the Thompson/West casebook Consumer Law: Cases and Materials and also Taming the Sharks: Towards a Cure for the High Cost Credit Market which won the American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers’ outstanding book of the year prize. He is a consumer fellow of the American Bar Association’s Consumer Finance Committee. In 2007 the National Association of Consumer Agency Administrators named Professor Peterson the nation’s consumer advocate of the year in recognition of his role in promoting an act of Congress limiting the price of loans to military service members. Professor Peterson has frequently testified before Congressional committees and has presented his research at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Federal Reserve Board Governors, and at the White House in both Republican and Democratic administrations. From 2009-2012 he served as his college’s Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
