Overview
Following a disaster, survivors face a wide variety of legal problems and obstacles to recovery. Helping Survivors of Disaster: FEMA Assistance and Overall Relief will be helpful to attorneys interested in learning about, and participating in, disaster legal services pro bono efforts.
Topics to be addressed include:
- Overview of federal disaster response programs
- In-depth review of FEMA IHP benefits, including recent changes from the Disaster Recovery Reform Act of 2018
- FEMA benefit denials and the appeal process
- Review of other major areas of law in disaster recovery, including insurance, housing, and consumer issues
- Long-term disaster recovery legal issues, including Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funding issues and duplication of benefits policy, benefit recoupment claims and debt collection
- Best practices for assisting in disaster relief
