Overview

It’s estimated that in 2020, there will be 38.5 billion IoT connected devices, and that there are already more than two times as many IoT devices in use today than there are people on the planet.  Despite the fact that many lawyers have smart devices in their homes and offices, and represent clients that use or develop smart technologies, a significant number of lawyers and clients are unaware of the data privacy and security risks and legal obligations associated with IoT devices.

Patrick J. Burke of Phillips Nizer LLP, Gail Gottehrer of the Law Office of Gail Gottehrer LLC and Ronald J. Hedges of Dentons US LLP address:

  • The types of data collected by IoT devices
  • The data privacy and cybersecurity concerns IoT devices bring
  • The laws that apply to these IoT devices
  • The ways in which data from IoT devices has been, and may be, used as evidence in legal proceedings
