Overview

Electronic communications are used for many reasons, good and bad. Among the latter is “doxing,” the use of those communications to reveal an individual’s contact information for harassment purposes. Arizona and California have enacted laws intended to criminalize doxing. This Briefing will focus on the Arizona law, how it compares to the California law, and how it might be enforced.  Faculty will also consider the interplay of anti-doxing laws with freedom of speech under First Amendment, “hate speech” laws, and Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.  Please join expert faculty as they discuss:

  • What “doxing” is (10 minutes)
  • Doxing and freedom of speech (10 minutes)
  • Doxing as “hate speech” (10 minutes)
  • Doxing and Section 230 (10 minutes)
  • The Arizona and California laws (20 minutes)
