The financial services industry faces another regulatory sea-change as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) leadership changes hands. The Mulvaney-Kraninger leadership had altered significant aspects of the CFPB’s prior regulatory priorities and approach. The CFPB is ramping up rapidly to tackle those key issues, the consumer protection concerns highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic and a range of new imperatives born of technology and market developments. Meanwhile, the lightning-rod agency will be the subject of rigorous oversight and activity by Congress. And the relationship between the CFPB and the States will be undergoing a major shift from the interactions of the Trump era.
