    Supreme Court – October Term 2022: A Term of Significant Rulings

    Overview

    The docket for the October Term 2022 for the Supreme Court is filled with cases of great legal and social importance that will profoundly affect the lives of many people. The 2016 election resulting in the three justices appointed by President Donald Trump was pivotal and will continue to determine the court’s agenda and rulings for many years to come.  Please join Dean Erwin Chemerinsky as he provides a review of the major cases this term, including those concerning affirmative action in higher education; partisan gerrymandering and the Voting Rights Act; whether applying a public-accommodation law to compel an artist to speak or stay silent violates the free speech clause of the First Amendment; the scope of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act; religious liberty under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act; and the standard for determining whether a statement is a true threat unprotected by the First Amendment.

    Cases to be addressed include:

    • Students for Fair Admissions v. University of North Carolina and Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard College – 10 minutes
    • Moore v. Harper and Merrill v. Milligan – 10 minutes
    • 303 Creative v. Elenis – 10 minutes
    • Gonzalez v. Google and Twitter v. Taamneh – 10 minutes
    • Groff v. DeJoy – 10 minutes
    • Counterman v. Colorado - 10 minutes
