Overview

Record clearance laws are changing rapidly around the country. Some states have passed broad automatic sealing legislation while other have no record clearance at all. New York has an application-based system that falls in between the two. Please join a New York state sealing expert and a national expert on automatic sealing innovations for an overview of the different systems in place and a discussion of where the law is heading.

Emma Goodman from The Legal Aid Society will discuss:
• New York’s application-based sealing law
• Procedures for applying and common complications
• Efforts to expand record clearance laws

Evonne Silva from Code for America will discuss:
• Recent innovations in automatic sealing
• What you need to know about your state’s data-management systems before you try to get automatic record clearance passed in your state
• Pointers for how to move the conversation forward
