New York has just enacted two laws intended to protect consumers and to impose new obligations on businesses that handle consumer data. These laws, together with the recently-enacted California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), will change the landscape of data privacy. This Briefing will introduce the SHIELD Act and its companion statute, explain who and what will be impacted by both laws, and consider how the New York laws might interact with the CCPA and the GDPR.
