Overview

With developments occurring in international markets, sanctions laws have quickly evolved as tensions between the United States, Iran, and Venezuela have greatly changed the sanctions landscape.  Similar developments have occurred with respect to sanctions issued by the EU, Her Majesty’s Treasury and the United Nations.  Never has it been more complicated to comply with international sanctions law and to keep abreast of developments.  This session will provide a brief overview of sanctions law generally, an update of current developments, enforcement, and compliance.  In addition, the session will cover developments with regard to the Helms-Burton Act and implications for doing business in Cuba, including the litigation risks.

Please join Bruce G. Paulsen, co-chair of the Litigation Department at Seward & Kissel LLP (New York), and Andrew S. Jacobson, a former New York State Department of Financial Services enforcement attorney and current associate at Seward & Kissel LLP, and Cherie Spinks (Of Counsel) and Alexandra Webster (Supervising Associate), both of Simmons & Simmons LLP (London), as they discuss the following:

  • An overview of U.S. sanctions law
  • An overview of the EU and UN sanctions regimes
  • A view from the New York State Department of Financial Services and its approach to sanctions enforcement
  • Recent developments with respect to sanctions against Iran, Venezuela, Russia, Cuba, and North Korea, as well as enforcement in the U.S. and the EU
  • Impact of the EU Blocking Statute
  • The Helms-Burton Act and implications for doing business in Cuba
  • Practical steps to ensure compliance – due diligence, contracting, legal advice – and ensure that you can get the deal done
