Overview

The success of open source software licensing has been astonishing and a boon to the technology world. This has caused many people to hope that the open source licensing paradigm can be applied to data as well. But attempts to overlay the OSS model on data, have been, so far, both fraught and unsuccessful. In this session you will learn:

  • The current state of data licensing today, and the legal underpinnings for why OSS-style data licensing doesn’t work for data (20 minutes)
  • Real-world problems in data licensing, especially for AI (20 minutes)
  • Best practices for use of licensed data, and best practices for release of data (20 minutes)
