Overview

Why You Should Attend

This half-day (4 hours) CLE credit accredited program is the first of its kind – bringing together forward-thinking practitioners in the blockchain and cannabis industries in a modern-day legal salon, designed to (1) examine and push the boundaries of current law and policy shaping the US cannabis industry, (2) provide an introduction to basic blockchain use cases (and an understanding of how current laws accommodate or constrain them), and (3) give speakers and attendees alike an opportunity to explore the application of blockchain use cases to solve real world problems in the cannabis industry.

Whether you’re looking for an introduction to legal and regulatory issues impacting the modern regulated cannabis industry, the basics on blockchain technology and current laws affecting (or being affected by) blockchain, or an engaging and entertaining intellectual experience—this program is for you.

What You Will Learn

After completing this program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the continued conflict between state cannabis laws and the federal Controlled Substances Act
  • Learn how federal anti-money laundering (AML) laws restrict banking access for state-licensed cannabis businesses, the means through which they mandate financial surveillance of the cannabis businesses and consumers and attempt to prevent cannabis commerce, and legislative efforts to reform federal law
  • Identify legislative efforts to address the legacy of racially-biased enforcement of cannabis prohibition through social equity
  • Gain a non-technical understanding of what a blockchain is, and the essential features of blockchain technology—permissionless networks, decentralization, transparency, immutability, and pseudonymity
  • Understand how cryptocurrency has been used in the past to evade financial surveillance and censorship of cannabis commerce and other illicit transactions, and why it offers an alternative to traditional financial services regulated by federal banking authorities
  • Obtain a basic understanding of certain blockchain-based technological innovations—including digital wallets, cryptocurrency, NFTs, smart contracts, oracles, DAOs—and what they make possible
