Overview

Microsoft Excel is an important tool for the modern legal practice. It is indispensable in managing document reviews, calculating damages, managing client information, and many other tasks routinely performed by attorneys. Because so many business clients use Excel, spreadsheets often become evidence in their own right, and attorneys need to be able to review and understand Excel documents. In this lively program, Ben J. Kusmin, a commercial litigator and the founder of Excel Esquire, will demonstrate the most important features of Microsoft Excel using concrete examples drawn from legal practice.

This presentation will include:

  • Navigating unfamiliar spreadsheets (15 minutes)
    • Applications: Interact successfully with clients,  expert witnesses, outside accountants, and other professionals; avoid inadvertent productions; competently review files produced by a litigation adversary
  • Formatting and printing (15 minutes)
    • Applications: Create effective exhibits for discovery motions, trials, and client presentations
  • Filters and pivot tables (15 minutes)
    • Applications: Quickly analyze a privilege log, a table of document metadata, a damages spreadsheet, or any other large dataset
  • Understanding and using Excel formulas (15 minutes)
    • Applications: Create a damages estimate; develop a case budget; detect fraudulent activity
