Overview

Since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, and other nations have imposed a raft of new sanctions against Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine.  The sanctions have targeted a number of sectors of the Russian economy, its Central Bank, as well as oligarchs and other supporters of the Russian Federation.  Moreover, these authorities have adopted other significant measures including the cross-border implementation of a price cap on the purchase of Russian-origin crude oil and petroleum products.  The rapid pace of developments in this space, and the complexity of the new sanctions programs, has posed a compliance challenge for businesses around the world.

This session will provide an overview of the current U.S., EU, and UK sanctions that have been imposed against Russia, recent developments in sanctions imposed on other countries, including Venezuela and Iran, and an update on as well as a discussion of compliance best practices and what the sanctions developments of 2022 may portend for the future.

Please join Bruce G. Paulsen, co-chair of the Litigation Department at Seward & Kissel LLP (New York), and Brian P. Maloney, Counsel at Seward & Kissel LLP, and Stephen Gentle (Partner) and Tom Bowen (Supervising Associate), both of Simmons & Simmons LLP (London), as they discuss the following:

  • An overview of the EU and UK sanctions regimes for Russia and related recent developments [20 minutes]
  • An overview of recent developments in other sanctions programs [10 minutes]
