Overview

We may be entering the era of autonomous vehicles, both on the ground and in the air. Although often “hyped” in the popular press and developers’ public relations releases, both technological advances and regulatory responses are leading to the deployment of vehicles do not need people at the controls to operate on roads and airspace. This Briefing will consider the current state of autonomous vehicles from both technological and regulatory viewpoints and how these vehicles might be used.

Topics to be addressed include:

  • The nature of autonomous and “almost” autonomous vehicles (10 minutes)
  • Regulatory approaches to testing and using autonomous vehicles (10 minutes)
  • Current and near-term practical uses of autonomous vehicles (10 minutes)
  • Interaction of autonomous vehicles with human-controlled ones (15 minutes)
  • Privacy and cybersecurity issues related to autonomous vehicles (15 minutes)
