Biography

David W. Tollen is one of the industry’s leading authorities on software licenses and cloud computing agreements. He is the author of the America Bar Association’s bestseller, The Tech Contracts Handbook: Cloud Computing Agreements, Software Licenses, and Other IT Contracts for Lawyers and Businesspeople. He is also an attorney and expert witness, and he teaches at the U.C. Berkeley Law School.

David is also the founder of Tech Contracts Academy, LLC (https://TechContracts.com/). There, he teaches IT contract drafting and negotiation. He conducts both public and in-house trainings for lawyers, contracts managers, IT staff, and other businesspeople.

David also founded Sycamore Legal, P.C. (https://SycamoreLegal.com/), a San Francisco law firm. He and his attorneys represent buyers and sellers in contracts about cloud computing, software licensing, and other IT relationships. They also advise on intellectual property and privacy. David’s training and legal clients range include some of the best-known and influential companies in the world.

David’s work as an expert witness involves litigation about IT contracts. And in his role at U.C. Berkeley Law School, he teaches IT contract drafting and negotiation.

David graduated with honors from Harvard Law School and has degrees from Cambridge University in England and U.C. Berkeley. On the side, he writes about history and science for young people. He is the author two award-winning educational novels: The Jericho River and Secrets of Hominea. David is also a member of the Board of Advisors for Ancient History Encyclopedia, the world’s most-read encyclopedia about history.


David graduated with honors from Harvard Law School and has degrees from Cambridge University in England and U.C. Berkeley. In addition to his legal work, he’s the author of an award-winning novel that uses fantasy to teach history, called The Jericho River.
