John Hart is a tax partner in the New York office of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP. Mr. Hart advises on a wide variety of tax matters, including formation of private investment funds; REITs and real estate transactions; and IPOs.
Mr. Hart is a member of the Executive Committee of the NYS Bar Association Tax Section and co-chairs the Section’s Investment Funds Committee. He is an adjunct professor at the NYU School of Law, where he teaches partnership tax. He is a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, a member and past president of the New York City Tax Club and a member and past chair of the Private Investment Fund Tax Forum. A regular speaker on partnership tax matters, he has presented at conferences sponsored by the NYS Bar Association, the NYU Real Estate Institute, the International Tax Institute, the International Bar Association, the Yale School of Management and other groups. Mr. Hart has been named one of the leading tax lawyers in the United States in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business 2017.
Mr. Hart received his J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1979. He received his A.B. with High Distinction and Highest Honors in English Literature in 1976 from the University of Michigan, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
