Charles S. Kim is a partner in the Business department of Cooley LLP, and is a member of the firm’s Capital Markets, Public Companies and Debt Securities Transactions practice groups. He began his legal career at Cravath, Swaine and Moore LLP in New York, where he represented both issuers and investment banking firms in public offerings and private placements of equity and debt, and commercial banks in syndicated financings. Mr. Kim then joined Cooley in 2003 and is currently resident in the firm’s San Diego office and also maintains an office in the firm’s Los Angeles office.
Mr. Kim specializes in representing issuers, investment banking firms and venture capital firms in public offerings and private placements of equity and debt securities. Mr. Kim’s practice also includes representation in general corporate and securities law related matters, and in a variety of other transactions. In 2014 and 2015 alone, Mr. Kim helped lead 53 completed public offerings.

Mr. Kim also represented Jeff Moorad/JSM Acquisition in connection with their acquisition of the San Diego Padres Major League Baseball franchise.
Mr. Kim has been named a Top 100 Lawyer in California across all specialties by the Daily Journal in both 2015 and 2014. He has also been named a Southern California as well as San Diego Super Lawyer by Thomson Reuters, as well as a San Diego Top Attorney by The Daily Transcript, in multiple years.
Mr. Kim received a J.D. from the New York University School of Law in 2000, where he was named a McKay Scholar. He received a M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1997, where he graduated in the top 1% of his class. He received a B.A. in religious studies from the University of Michigan in 1994, where he graduated with academic distinction.
Mr. Kim was a featured presenter in the Securities Regulation Institute’s national panel on “Key Issues in Capital Formation” in January 2016. Mr. Kim is a member of Law360's Capital Markets Editorial Advisory Board. Mr. Kim also serves as a regular guest lecturer at the Entrepreneurship Clinic and in a course entitled “High Tech Start-Ups” at the University of San Diego School of Law.
