CLE Requirements: The West Virginia State Bar requires attorneys to complete 24 credits, including 3 credits in legal ethics, office management, substance abuse, and/or elimination of bias in the legal profession, by June 30 of even years. All credits must be reported by July 31 of even years. Attorneys are limited to 12 credits of online instruction per compliance period. A maximum of 6 general credits may be carried over to the next compliance period. No legal ethics, office management, substance abuse and/or elimination of bias in the legal profession credits may be carried over. Coronavirus update: Due to ongoing concerns associated with the COVID-19 virus, the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia issued an order effective January 28, 2021 that allows attorneys to earn all or any portion of the required 24 CLE credit minimum through video, audio, correspondence, telephone seminars, computer-based training courses and in-house instruction. This temporary waiver is limited to the 2020-2022 reporting period ending June 30, 2022. The West Virginia Mandatory CLE Commission previously suspended the live requirement effective March 12, 2020, through June 30, 2020. West Virginia-licensed attorneys were able to meet their full requirement via PLI live webcasts and on-demand programs approved in West Virginia. The West Virginia Mandatory CLE Commissio also issued an order that extended the deadline for the 2018-2020 CLE reporting period to September 30, 2020.
