CLE Requirements: The Supreme Court of New Jersey Board on Continuing Legal Education requires attorneys to complete 24 credits, including 5 credits of ethics and/or professionalism, by December 31 every two years. At least 2 credit hours of the 5 credit hours in professionalism and ethics include the completion of qualifying coursework on diversity, inclusion, and elimination of bias. There are two compliance groups: Group 1 is made up of attorneys born January 1 through June 30 who report in even-numbered years; Group 2 is made up of attorneys born July 1 through December 31 who report in odd-numbered years. All credit must be reported by December 31. Attorneys must earn at least 12 credits through live programs and are limited to 12 credits of alternate verifiable learning formats per reporting period. A maximum of 12 credits may be carried over to the next reporting period. NEW!: Effective January 1, 2021, The Supreme Court of New Jersey Board on Continuing Legal Education has amended Rule 1:42-1 (“Continuing Legal Education Required”) and CLE regulations 103:1 and 201:1 to increase the total credit hours required for professionalism and ethics from four to five credits (of the overall total requirement of 24 credits per two-year reporting cycle) and require that at least two credit hours of those five credit hours in professionalism and ethics include the completion of qualifying coursework on diversity, inclusion, and elimination of bias. Coronavirus update: In response to the growing public health crisis worldwide and in New Jersey, The Supreme Court of New Jersey Board on Continuing Legal Education has issued an order to relax the live classroom instruction requirement. Effective immediately, all twenty-four credit hours for the compliance period may be fulfilled through approved courses offered in alternative verifiable learning formats until further notice. Newly admitted attorneys must also obtain 15 of the required 24 credits in any 5 of 9 newly admitted subject areas. Learn about the specific requirements for newly-admitted New Jersey attorneys. Completing Your New Jersey Requirements with PLI: PLI and SEC Institute's live seminars qualify as "live" credit. There is no limit to the number of credits an attorney can earn via live programs.
PLI and SEC Institute's live webcasts, co-sponsored locations (New Brunswick), on-demand programs, MP3s and MP4s qualify as "alternate verifiable learning formats" credit. Attorneys are limited to 12 credits of alternate verifiable learning formats per reporting period. However, attorneys who reside in, work in, and are licensed in a mandatory CLE jurisdiction that allows for 100% of CLE courses to be taken through alternate verifiable learning formats shall, through reciprocity, be able to satisfy their CLE obligation in New Jersey through 100% alternate verifiable learning formats (Regulation 201:8). Attendance Reporting: Attorneys must report their own attendance to the Supreme Court of New Jersey Board on Continuing Legal Education via the Annual Attorney Registration Statement.
