Taken from the briefing Your Voice:  What You Say and How You Say It Influence Your Success and Your Career recorded May, 2016 in New York.

For lawyers on the move, whether a litigator or transactional attorney, your voice, physical presence, style and polished negotiation skills will all determine your career success in court, with clients and other parties. You may consider yourself to be a good communicator, but new barriers to effective persuasion have exploded along with advances in technology; linguistic, cultural and generational differences in the workplace require new training in our diverse world. Plus, being “on screen”, such as in video phone conferences, on TV or video recordings on social media dramatically amplify self-presentation issues you have that have not been specifically polished.

Lecture Topics  [01:01:44]

To help you move ahead, the presenters address:

  • How to adjust your speech to communicate clearly with juries, judges, opposing counsel, and other parties in a transaction
  • How to command your vocal presence in front of a jury, judge, opposing counsel, and other parties in transactions
  • Accents, regionalisms, up-speak and “vocal fry” when negotiating a settlement, a contract and in speaking with other parties
  • Eliminating self-minimizing words and phrases throughout the negotiation process
  • Key negotiation skills for litigators and transactional lawyers
  • Distracting physical mannerisms during trial, client conferences and meetings with adverse parties
