William Kilberg

William J. Kilberg is a senior partner in Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP in Washington, D.C. and a member of both the Executive and Management Committees of the firm. His practice includes all aspects of employee compensation and benefits, employee relations, and labor relations. He has appeared numerous times in federal and state trial courts and has argued significant employee benefits and other matters before the U.S. Supreme Court and the courts of appeals. Mr. Kilberg was appointed in 1973 by the president and confirmed by the Senate as the Solicitor for the U.S. Department of Labor, a position he served in until 1977. He holds the distinction of having been the youngest person ever confirmed for a sub-cabinet post in the U.S. government, and he headed the Department of Labor task force involved in the process leading up to the passage of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974. He also has served as Associate Solicitor of Labor for Labor Relations and Civil Rights, General Counsel of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, and as a White House Fellow and Special Assistant to Secretary of Labor George P. Shultz. Mr. Kilberg was named the “Top Employment Litigator” in the Washington metropolitan area in 2005 by the Washington Business Journal. Lawdragon has identified him as one of the 500 leading lawyers in the nation in each edition from 2005–2010 and, along with Human Resource Executive Magazine, has named him among the 100 Most Powerful Employment Attorneys. Chambers lists Mr. Kilberg in 2010 as a leading lawyer in both ERISA litigation and Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation. He is a charter member of both the College of Labor & Employment Lawyers and the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel.
