Ugo Bassi

Ugo Bassi was appointed in 2009 as head of unit for asset management in DG Markt. Many of the policies under his auspices are in direct response to the financial crisis. The ultimate objective is to create a harmonised and robust regulatory framework for investment products within the European Union. He and his team lead files such as: the AIFMD proposal (Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive) - which includes hedge funds and private equities; the initiative on PRIPs (Packaged Retail Investment Products), aimed at enhancing transparency and investor protection in the area of disclosure and conduct of business; implementation of the recently adopted changes in the field of regulated investment funds (UCITS IV).

Ugo Bassi is a lawyer by profession. He holds a masters in EC law and policy, from the College of Europe (Bruges). Before joining the European Commission in 1997, Ugo Bassi spent time as a referendaire in the Court of Justice and he has experience of private sector law firms. Before taking up his current position, he headed the Public Procurement unit, where he saw to adoption a Directive on Defence Procurement.
