Trent P. Cornell

Pedersen & Houpt

Chicago, IL, USA

Trent Cornell focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation, restructuring litigation, and related business counseling. Trent's practice often requires close interaction with financial consultants and valuation professionals in both litigation and M&A contexts.  Including his previous practice with two large international law firms, Trent has represented corporations, partnerships, trustees, committees, financial institutions and individuals in breach of contract, trade secret, breach of fiduciary duty, shareholder derivative, and other claims before courts and arbitration panels throughout the country.  Trent has also assisted clients in restructuring debt, sales and acquisitions, working out loans and transferring assets in a variety of capacities. Trent is committed to finding the best business solutions for his clients and he is often called upon to give general business and strategic advice, drawing from the talent and experience of other attorneys in the firm when appropriate to give his clients answers that make sense legally and practically.

In the area of complex commercial litigation, Trent has negotiated, mediated, arbitrated, and/or tried cases involving a wide range of issues and industries. Trent's clients praise his ability to devise and execute strategic plans in litigation and to break down even the most complex issues for judges and juries.  This upfront strategizing saves needless discovery and puts his clients in the position of driving litigation, not just reacting to an opponent's moves as can happen when litigators follow a playbook.  This approach also helps keep litigation manageable and keeps his clients informed at all critical stages as the case moves forward in or out of court.

In the area of bankruptcy/creditors' rights, Trent focuses his attention on representing trustees and creditor groups, including official committees, in large bankruptcies. Trent has had the privilege of leading more Retiree Committee representations than any other attorney in the U.S. Trent's work in this area has been recognized on many occasions, not just by the committees themselves, but also by judges, trustees and other attorneys. Among other engagements in this area, Trent was lead counsel to the Official Retiree Committees in Hostess Brands, FV Steel, Wagner Castings, Hayes-Lemmerz, Int'l., Dana Corporation, Keystone Wire (II), International Metals (Intermet), and Delphi Corporation. Trent also represented retiree groups in the Edison Mission Energy, Chrysler, General Motors, Visteon, and Bowe, Bell + Howell bankruptcies.

Two international publications, Global Law Experts and Corporate INTL, recently recognized Trent as the Restructuring Litigator of 2014 in Illinois.  Trent has also been recognized by his peers with a "Superlawyers" listing in Business Litigation from 2012-2014, and listing as a "Rising Star" in 2010 and 2011.
