Timothy Muris is Of Counsel to the Antitrust & Competition group in the Washington, D.C. office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP. His practice focuses on all aspects of antitrust enforcement, including mergers, civil investigations, and strategic counseling. He also focuses on consumer protection issues, including advertising and privacy regulation.
Tim is a former Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, holding this position from 2001 to 2004. Under his leadership, the FTC created the National Do Not Call Registry, brought successful cases against firms for misusing government processes to raise prices, brought numerous lawsuits against physicians for price-fixing, challenged fraudulent and deceptive advertising and health claims to protect U.S. consumers, and increased antitrust scrutiny of intellectual property issues. Tim had previously served the FTC as Director of the Bureau of Competition from 1983-1985 and the Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection from 1981-1983. He is the only person ever to direct both of the FTC's enforcement bureaus. During his earlier tenure at the FTC, the agency brought three successful and ground-breaking antitrust cases before the U.S. Supreme Court: FTC v. Ticor Title Insurance Co., FTC v. Superior Court Trial Lawyers Ass'n, and FTC v. Indiana Fed'n of Dentists.

Since entering private practice, Tim has represented clients before the Federal Trade Commission, the U.S. Department of Justice, the European Commission, and other agencies, both domestically and internationally. His most significant representations include Verizon in its acquisition of MCI, Northwest Airlines in its merger with Delta Air Lines, and Exxon Mobil in various FTC matters. Tim also served on President Bush's Advisory Panel on Tax Reform in 2005.

Chambers USA lauded Tim as a "Senior Statesmen" in antitrust who is "friendly, diplomatic and calm," and who "commands a huge amount of respect from the agencies." Legal 500, Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers Magazine, and other leading legal publications have recognized Tim for his outstanding work. The Legal Times listed him as a Leading Lawyer in Antitrust, and he was included in the Washingtonian magazine's biannual "Top Lawyers" list. Global Competition Review noted that he was among the best antitrust lawyers in the United States, and he is listed in the International Who's Who of Competition Lawyers and the GCR 100.
