Thomas G. Pasternak is a partner in the Chicago office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP, where he is a member of the Intellectual Property practice group. Mr. Pasternak's practice primarily focuses on the areas of patent and trademark litigation.

Mr. Pasternak has represented clients in a diverse range of technologies, including, semiconductors, electrical and electronic products, cellular telephony, consumer products of all types, e-commerce and business methods, battery technology, automotive technology and products, molecular diagnostics, biotechnology, polymer chemistry and packaging, and paper products. He has a particularly strong background in electrical engineering from his undergraduate and graduate coursework, from his service aboard a nuclear submarine, and from numerous cases litigating patents in the electrical engineering field. He also has extensive experience with chemical cases and medical devices, including experience with glucose monitoring systems involving the use of sensors located on the skin and trans-skin detection units and systems and has represented clients in several Hatch-Waxman actions. Mr. Pasternak has also handled trademark and trade dress litigation for a variety of clients in many different industries. In addition, he has extensive patent prosecution and licensing experience, and has written and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications in many technologies, including medical devices and various mechanical and electro-mechanical technologies.

Mr. Pasternak has been the lead lawyer in several "rocket docket" litigations in Wisconsin and Virginia. He has also been responsible for litigation involving numerous patents, large teams from different offices and multiple defendants. Mr. Pasternak's recent litigation successes include: (1) defeating a motion for a preliminary injunction for Amazon in Delaware in a patent infringement matter; (2) winning a motion for summary judgment in a trade matter filed against La Cafetiere by Bodum, Inc.; (3) winning a jury verdict in a trial in the Western District of Wisconsin that led to a finding of willful infringement; (4) winning summary judgment of patent invalidity and non-infringement, as well as obtaining attorneys' fees for his client, in the Eastern District of Virginia; and (5) winning a trade dress case relating to French press coffee makers on summary judgment in the Northern District of Illinois.

Mr. Pasternak has extensive experience litigating cases in the ITC, and he frequently argues before the Federal and Seventh Circuits. 

He previously served as the vice president and chief patent counsel of a major Chicago-based company. Prior to law school, he served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Haddo, SSN-604.
