Thomas D. Rein

Sidley Austin LLP

Chicago, IL, USA

Thomas D. Rein is a global practice area team leader in Sidley’s intellectual property practice, head of Sidley’s Chicago IP group and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. The focus of his practice is on intellectual property disputes, most particularly patent infringement suits. A highly successful trial lawyer, Tom is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He has had sweeping successes before juries on behalf of both plaintiffs and defendants in numerous high stakes patent cases. For example, Tom obtained a $95 million jury verdict on behalf of a patent holder (one of the largest verdicts of the year), shortly before obtaining a big win in another case for an alleged infringer (the jury found no infringement and invalidated the patents on four separate grounds). Tom has also prevailed before a jury when patents were asserted both directions, obtaining lost profits on his client’s patents while invalidating the competitor’s three patents.
