Tearra J. Vaughn is an associate and intellectual property lawyer with Foley & Lardner LLP in Chicago, IL. Her practice concentrates on intellectual property strategy, patent portfolio analysis, intellectual property agreement counseling and review, and the preparation and prosecution of domestic and foreign patent applications in the computer, electronic, and electromechanical arts.

She is experienced in the fields of computer hardware and software, network storage, wireless telecommunications, mobile devices, touch technologies, radio frequency identification, e-commerce, electronic control systems and applications for engine systems, exhaust systems, and filtration systems, gaming systems, printing solutions, OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture) devices, biomedical devices, medical storage and dispensing systems, and dental devices.

Prior to attending law school, she was a systems analyst consultant and project manager. Ms. Vaughn consulted clients on various implementations of technology systems and solutions.  She provided expertise in identifying, evaluating, and developing systems, procedures, and security.

Ms. Vaughn received her law degree from Indiana University Maurer School of Law in Bloomington, Indiana.  During law school, she was a research assistant for the Lawyers in International Practice project and a member of the Intellectual Property Association and Faculty Appointments Committee. While in undergrad, Ms. Vaughn studied electrical engineering and computer science with a secondary study in management of technology.  Her undergraduate degree in computer engineering was conferred by Vanderbilt University.

Ms. Vaughn is the Founder of the M. H. Hill Female in Engineering Award established to encourage women to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) based careers.  Currently, she serves as the Newsletter Editor for the Big Data Committee of the American Bar Association Section of Science & Technology. She is an active committee member of the Intellectual Property Owners Association IP Licensing Committee and Corporate Counsel Women of Color.  Additionally, she is an alumni interviewer of prospective students for the Vanderbilt University Commodore Recruitment Programs. 

Ms. Vaughn is admitted to practice in Illinois and North Carolina. She is also registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
