Steven J. Tave is of counsel in the Washington, D.C. office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP. His practice focuses on FDA and healthcare compliance, enforcement, and litigation for pharmaceutical and medical device clients.

From 2007 through 2012, Mr. Tave served as Associate Chief Counsel for Enforcement in the FDA's Office of Chief Counsel.  In that capacity, he worked closely with FDA's Office of Criminal Investigations, as well as the Department of Justice and other federal and state agencies, as the lead FDA attorney in investigating, prosecuting, and resolving criminal enforcement actions and related civil False Claims Act qui tam cases involving drugs, medical devices, and biological products.  His substantive experience includes cases involving allegations relating to, among other things, manufacturing practices, marketing and promotional activities, and reporting obligations. 

During his time at FDA, Mr. Tave also was appointed by the Department of Justice as a Special Assistant United States Attorney.  In that role, he successfully prosecuted cases involving fraudulently marketed dietary supplements, illegally imported unapproved generic drugs, smuggling, and fraud. He also represented FDA in civil litigation, including defensive litigation and affirmative enforcement actions, and developed and provided training on food and drug law. He was recognized for his work numerous times, including with the FDA Outstanding Service Award in 2010.

Before entering government, Mr. Tave worked in private practice in Washington, D.C., representing individuals and organizations in complex and high-profile criminal and civil government investigations, internal investigations, and civil litigation, including matters related to Enron and Fannie Mae. 

Mr. Tave earned his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was Articles Development Editor of the Journal of Law & Politics, and his Bachelor of Arts degree from Northwestern University. He is a member of the Bars of the District of Columbia and Virginia, and is admitted to practice before the United States Courts of Appeals for the Fourth and Eleventh Circuits and the United States District Courts for the District of Columbia and the Eastern District of Virginia.
