Stephen Wermiel, Professor of Practice at American University Washington College of Law, completed his term as chair of the ABA Section of Individual Rights & Responsibilities (IRR) in August 2013. He is chair of the IRR Publications Committee and is a member of the ABA Committee on Public Education. He is co-author of the biography, JUSTICE BRENNAN: LIBERAL CHAMPION, published in 2010 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and in paperback in 2013 by University Press of Kansas. He is also co-author of THE PROGENY: JUSTICE WILLIAM J. BRENNAN’S FIGHT TO PRESERVE THE LEGACY OF NEW YORK TIMES V. SULLIVAN, published by ABA Publishing in February 2014.Wermiel teaches constitutional law, First Amendment and a seminar on the Supreme Court. He writes a regular Supreme Court column for law students on SCOTUSblog. From 1979 to 1991, he was the Supreme Court correspondent for The Wall Street Journal. He received his law degree from the Washington College of Law in 1982 and has been a member of the Bar of the District of Columbia since 1984. He received his B.A. from Tufts in 1972.
