Stephen Clayton

Attorney specializing in Foreign Corrupt Practices Act services, international commercial law and international intellectual property law.

Stephen worked for 7 years in private practice in Sacramento, Seattle, and Tokyo, Japan. In 1984 he moved in-house and became International Counsel for ComputerLand Corporation. He joined Sun Microsystems in 1988 as the company's first international lawyer, responsible for all legal work for Sun in AsiaPac, Latin America, and Canada. He was Sun's head Asia/Pacific lawyer for 8 years and then European General Counsel, and after that General Counsel for Sun's $1.5B Network Storage Division and Sun's head outsourcing lawyer. 

In 2005 Stephen became Senior Director, Anti-Corruption Compliance, responsible for Sun's global FCPA compliance. Having worked many years building international distribution, he was well aware of the reality of corruption in international business. He developed and implemented anti-corruption programs including the most comprehensive business partner due diligence program in the computer sector, and conducted FCPA investigations in many countries. 

Sun was acquired by Oracle and Stephen began consulting on Foreign Corrupt Practice Act compliance while looking for another international legal position in the San Francisco Bay Area. 

J.D. 1977 McGeorge School of Law; LL.M.  1984, Asian Law, University of Washington School of Law; California Bar (1977); Washington State Bar (1980). Stephen lived for 7 years in Japan, 2 years in the UK, and 9 months in Bangalore, India. He lives with his wife in Piedmont, California, and his hobbies include playing bass and singing in blues and rock and roll bands.
