Stefan D. Stein is Qwest's Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer and Senior Vice President - Risk Management. He is responsible for ethics and corporate compliance, sales and new product compliance, privacy and court orders, security, disaster preparedness, safety and environmental management, and risk finance, insurance and claims.

Previously, Mr. Stein was Deputy General Counsel at Qwest. In that position, he oversaw Qwest's Special Litigation group, which directed Qwest's responses to government investigations and its defense to securities and related litigation.

Before he joined Qwest in 2001, Mr. Stein was a partner at the Denver law firm of Sherman & Howard, where he chaired the firm's Litigation Department.  Mr. Stein previously served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney with the United States Attorney's Office in Los Angeles, where he was Deputy Chief of the Public Corruption and Government Fraud section. In 1994, the Attorney General of the United States presented Mr. Stein with the Director's Award for Superior Performance. Prior to his service at the U.S. Attorney's Office, Mr. Stein was a partner at the Los Angeles law firm of Wyman, Bautzer, Kuchel & Silbert.

Mr. Stein graduated with honors from Stanford University with a bachelor's degree in economics and received his juris doctorate degree from the University of Michigan.

Mr. Stein serves on the board of directors (and is a former board chair) of Urban Peak, a non-profit organization that provides shelter and other services to homeless youth and youth at risk of becoming homeless.
