Sorinel Cimpoes focuses his practice on intellectual property matters with a special emphasis on mechanical and electro-mechanical patent prosecution and litigation. He advises and effectively assists clients in all aspects of intellectual property law, including managing and protecting intellectual property portfolios.

Sorin’s litigation experience includes participation in and preparation for Markman hearings, drafting motions and memoranda, and conducting discovery. He has experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications in mechanical and electro-mechanical arts, including drafting and filing appeal briefs. He has conducted numerous personal interviews with examiners at the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Sorin’s practice includes counseling clients and preparing patentability, infringement, and validity analyses. He has handled projects involving technologies such as medical devices, wagering systems, currency and coin processing devices, electrical power monitoring systems, laser-diode systems, lighting arrangements, microscopy, and agricultural systems.

Formerly, as a mechanical engineer, Sorin has assisted in the development and building of several x-ray beamlines at Argonne National Laboratory’s Advanced Photon Source. His responsibilities, as a team member of the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Center for Synchrotron Radiation Research and Instrumentation, included designing and developing key x-ray components, creating FEA models for thermal and motion analysis, and drafting of hundreds of CAD drawings.

Sorin serves as general legal counsel for the Chicago Metropolitan Baptist Association (CMBA), and has assisted director Keith Draper in numerous projects related to the more than 200 member Churches of the CMBA. Sorin is also a member of the American Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, and the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago (in which he has served on various committees).
