Simon G. Brandler serves as a Senior Advisor and Special Counsel to New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman. In this position, Mr. Brandler advises the Attorney General on various matters of law, strategy, and policy, including technology and ethics reform issues, and plays a leadership role in major agency initiatives.

Among the highlights of his work for the Attorney General, Mr. Brandler headed a pricing inquiry that led a drug manufacturer to cut and cap the cost of a lifesaving heroin antidote for public agencies; served as a primary author of “AirBnb in the City,” a groundbreaking report in which the agency analyzed the character and impact of the short-term rental market in New York City; participated in a successful enforcement action to end the illegal use of unlicensed commercial drivers and underinsured vehicles by the for-hire car service Lyft, Inc.; and acted as lead negotiator of landmark settlements with GNC and Nature's Bounty Co. to overhaul quality control procedures for herbal supplements, including through the use of DNA barcode technology.

Mr. Brandler first joined the Attorney General’s office in 2011. He initially served as a prosecutor in the agency’s Public Integrity Bureau, where he successfully prosecuted cases involving official misconduct and theft of public funds. This included the conviction of a state senator’s campaign treasurer for embezzling more than half a million dollars in city and state grants. In 2013, 2014, and again in 2016 the agency awarded Mr. Brandler a Louis J. Lefkowitz Memorial Award, the highest commendation for superior service by an attorney at the Office of the New York Attorney General.

Before entering state service, Mr. Brandler practiced law at a private firm and was later employed as a communications and policy advisor to the New York State Democratic Committee. Earlier in his career, Mr. Brandler served as a legislative assistant to a United States Senator and a campaign speechwriter.

Mr. Brandler graduated magna cum laude from Yale College in 2000, with distinction in the History major. He earned his law degree from Columbia Law School in 2007, where he was recognized as a Harlan Fiske Stone scholar in his final year. 
Mr. Brandler is an affiliate member of the Government Ethics Committee of the New York City Bar Association.
