Sharon A. Hwang is a partner at McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd, where  she focuses her practice on patent litigation and intellectual property counseling. For more than twenty years, Sharon has represented patentees and defendants in high-stakes patent litigation in federal courts, the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. Since 2015, Sharon has been recognized every year as an Illinois Super Lawyer, selected as an IP Star by Managing Intellectual Property, and was previously recognized as one of the “Best Lawyers Under 40” in the country by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. She is also listed in the 2018 edition of the IAM Patent 1000 rankings.

Sharon currently serves as the only female and minority on McAndrews’ Executive Committee, and she spearheaded the launch of the firm’s Diversity in Patent Law Fellowship, which encourages diversity in the field of intellectual property law. Sharon is currently the Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Chicago Legal Clinic, a not-for-profit organization that provides community-based, quality legal services to the underserved and disadvantaged in the Chicago area. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Chicago Committee on Minorities in Large Law Firms, the Asian American Bar Association Law Foundation (“AABA Law Foundation”), and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Alumni Board for the University of Illinois. Sharon is a Fellow of Leadership Greater Chicago, a Past-President of the Asian American Bar Association of Greater Chicago, and a Past-President of the AABA Law Foundation. Sharon has received the Vanguard Award from the Chinese American Bar Association, the Sandra R. Otaka Leadership Award from the Asian American Bar Association, and the Advocate for Diversity Award from the Diversity Scholarship Foundation.

Sharon frequently speaks on patent law as well as diversity issues. She has spoken at events for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, Practising Law Institute, Minority Corporate Counsel Association, Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago, Coalition of Women’s Initiatives in Law, Diversity Scholarship Foundation, Northwestern University School of Law, University of Chicago School of Law, Chicago-Kent College of Law, University of Illinois Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, and weSTEM (Women Empowered in STEM).
