Shahram Safai is a partner at Afridi & Angell and his practice consists of corporate law (including licensing and mergers & acquisitions), real estate & construction law as well as litigation and arbitration. Mr. Safai also advises on private equity and venture capital transactions (including in the information technology and biotechnology fields).

He is highly sought after by boards and shareholders in the recent global financial crisis for strategic legal advice. He is active in lobbying for and providing constructive feedback to government organisations regarding regional laws and regulations pertaining to investment, corporate governance and real estate.

Mr. Safai has extensive experience advising on joint ventures, shareholder transactions, purchase and sale transactions, hotel management structuring and transactions, leasing, jointly owned property strategies and documentation, and related court cases and arbitrations. He regularly represents master developers, sub-developers, property owners, architects, engineers, contractors and government entities in all stages of the real estate and construction processes. Recent work includes:

  • Strategic board advice, negotiation and drafting of multi billion dirham corporate restructuring documents for a prominent, international conglomerate;
  • Representation of a large regional industrial company in its multi billion dirham dispute with government entities;
  • Strategic cross-border and transactional advice to a prominent regional company with respect to a multi billion dollar project in Ajman, U.A.E.; and
  • Strata law advice, drafting of all documentation and liaison with the regulator for an iconic multi billion dirham project in the Dubai International Financial Centre.


Mr. Safai has successfully supervised many court actions and arbitrations, with one such matter involving a transaction dispute of approximately one billion dirhams.

Mr. Safai is also a registered professional engineer and a regular speaker at seminars on legal developments and current issues in real estate and construction law.

Mr. Safai is well recognized by the leading international legal industry publications such as Chambers Global and Legal 500. He has been most recently independently described as "a cut above the rest with thorough knowledge, sharp analytical prowess, understanding of the industry, good relationships with government authorities and the best of communication skills" (Legal 500, 2011). He has also been recognized as a "Leader" in his field of practice (Chambers Global, 2011).
