Sarah Jo Hamilton is a partner in the firm SCALISE HAMILTON & SHERIDAN LLP in Scarsdale, New York. The Firm focuses its practice on the representation of professionals (lawyers, judges, accountants, doctors, dentists, pharmacists, social workers, and government employees) in professional responsibility and ethics matters, and white-collar criminal matters. Before entering private practice in 2007, Ms. Hamilton was the Secretary to the Committee on Character and Fitness for the First Judicial Department, where she supervised applications and litigated hearings for lawyers seeking admission to the bar.  Prior to that, for thirteen years Ms. Hamilton was employed at the Departmental Disciplinary Committee for the First Judicial Department. She served as Special Trial Counsel from 1989 to 2000 and First Deputy Chief Counsel from 2000 to 2003.  In her years at the Committee she handled complex disciplinary matters including investigations, hearings and appellate review of attorney ethical misconduct pursuant to the Code of Professional Responsibility, the Judiciary Law and the New York Rules of Court.  Ms. Hamilton supervised and trained staff attorneys and was actively involved in office management.  From 1985 to 1989 Ms. Hamilton served as General Counsel to the Off Track Betting Corporation.  She also served as an Assistant District Attorney in New York County from 1976 to 1985, where she was appointed the first Senior Trial Counsel in Charge of the Domestic Violence Unit. In 2014 Ms. Hamilton was appointed to serve on the Public Policy & Action Committee of the New York County Lawyers’ Association.

Ms. Hamilton received a Juris Doctor from St. John’s University Law School and a BSFS from Georgetown University.

Ms. Hamilton is actively involved in several bar associations; New York State Bar Association where she is Chair of the Committee on Professional Discipline; New York City Bar Association; New York County Lawyers Association where she is Director of the NYCLA Ethics Institute and a member of the Ethics Committee; Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York where she serves as Co­Chair of the Professional Ethics Committee; the Orange County Bar Association and the Sullivan County Bar Association.. 

Ms. Hamilton has coordinated and/or lectured in Bridge the Gap and Continuing Legal Education programs for the Appellate Division, First Department; the New York County Lawyers Association; the New York State Bar Association; the New York City Bar Association, New York County Lawyers’ Association, LawLine and the Practicing Lawyers Institute.  She has also lectured at the New York University Law School, Brooklyn Law School, Cardozo Law School, CUNY Law School and the New York Law School.
