Mr. Kuan is currently a Partner with McDermott, Will & Emery, an international law firm with 19 offices worldwide. 

His practice is focused on Personalized/Precision Medicine and Diagnostics (with an emphasis in bioinformatics and computational genomics), Digital Health, Life Sciences Tooling and Medical Devices.

He helps his clients strategically build (and defend) their patent portfolios, identify and manage freedom to operate issues and ensure favorable outcomes for their IP related transactions (e.g., M&A diligence, inbound and outbound licensing negotiations/agreements, joint development agreements, supplier/OEM agreements, collaboration agreements, consulting agreements, NDAs/CDAs, etc.).

Prior to joining MWE, Mr. Kuan was a Director, IP Counsel at Thermo Fisher Scientific with rotational responsibility overseeing all intellectual property matters for their Personalized/Precision Medicine (e.g., Molecular Diagnostics, Computational Genomics/Bioinformatics, Genomic Sequencing Platforms, etc.) and Life Sciences Tooling (e.g., Laboratory Instrumentation/Software, Imaging Devices & Systems, Biomanufacturing, etc. ) business segments.  During his tenure at Thermo Fisher, he has grown & defended Thermo Fisher’s IP portfolio, assisted with litigation-related matters, performed due diligence on M&A deals/targets, and resolved disputes.

Mr. Kuan earned a B.S. in Toxicology from University of California, Davis, a M.S. in Environmental Engineering (with an emphasis in Biochemical Engineering) from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (CalPoly-SLO) and a J.D. from Santa Clara University. Prior to joining Thermo Fisher, he was an associate with the international law firm of Baker & McKenzie where he represented clients from a wide range of industries (e.g., medical device, software, semiconductor fabrication, telecommunications, chemistry, laboratory instrumentation, computer hardware, etc.) in patent prosecution and litigation matters. Before transitioning his career into the legal industry, Mr. Kuan was employed with several Fortune 500 pharmaceutical, chemical and medical device companies such as FMC Corporation, Sanofi-Aventis, and Johnson & Johnson where he held professional positions in the R&D, Sales and Engineering organizations.
