Richard Ward

Richard Ward is co-managing partner for the firm in London, and Chair of the firm’s UK Tax practice. A broad-gauged UK corporate and transactional tax lawyer, Mr. Ward has advised an array of multinational clients on mergers & acquisitions, joint ventures, financing transactions and private equity fund formation and operation.

Mr. Ward is ranked as a leading individual for Tax in Chambers UK (2015), where he is described as “outstanding” and is praised by clients as “calm and sensible. In commercial terms he is someone you can turn to for a mixture of tactical and legal advice.” He is also recommended in the Tax Directors Handbook (2014). According to The Legal 500 UK (2013), “Richard Ward’s team at Debevoise stands out for its expertise in private fund formation and restructuring.” He is recognised as a leading tax lawyer by The Legal 500 UK (2014) and Chambers UK (2014), with clients highlighting his ability to “distil complex tax principles into comprehensible advice.” Chambers Global (2014) ranks Mr. Ward as a Notable Practitioner for tax advice in the UK.

Mr. Ward is the author of a number of articles, including articles in the Corporate Tax Review on U.S./UK hybrid vehicles and the tax treatment of telecommunications assets. He is co-author of “United Kingdom - Fund Formation,”Getting the Deal Through: Private Equity (2012, 2013 and 2015) and “United Kingdom - Transactions,” Getting the Deal Through: Private Equity (2015). Recent speaking engagements include “Advanced Private Equity Fund Formation: Key Business, Legal and Tax Issues,” Chambers and Partners (January, 2013); and “London Insurance Roundtable,” Debevoise & Plimpton LLP (November, 2009).

Mr. Ward received his B.A. from Oxford University in 1982, where he was an Open Exhibitioner at St. Edmund Hall. He qualified to practice in England and Wales in 1985.
