Richard N. Winfield

Richard N. Winfield regularly teaches comparative mass media law at Columbia Law School and a course in mass media and Internet law at Fordham Law School. He leads the media law reform programs of the International Senior Lawyers Project, a non-governmental organization he co-founded in 2000. He has spoken and consulted on media law reform topics in over twenty countries. His amicus curiae briefs have been submitted in press freedom cases to the European Court of Human Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

Mr. Winfield conceived, compiled, contributed to and edited the anthology, Exporting the Matrix: The Campaign to Reform Media Laws Abroad. Carolina Academic Press published his book in June 2012. His articles on international media law topics have appeared in Communications Lawyer and the Journal of International Media and Entertainment Law. For over three decades he served as general counsel of the Associated Press while a partner at Rogers & Wells, which later became Clifford Chance US LLP. There he defended AP and other media clients in many hundreds of press freedom cases in the United States and abroad.

Mr. Winfield served as chairman of World Press Freedom Committee and the Fund for Peace, and served as a trustee of Freedom House.
