With almost 20 years of experience as a patent practitioner, Richard Bone practices in all aspects of patent preparation and prosecution, particularly in chemical and biological arts, and complex and cross-disciplinary technologies, such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, materials science, nanotechnology, medical device and computer/algorithm-based inventions.  

Richard’s experience includes counseling clients in worldwide patent portfolio strategy and management, as well as rendering opinions in patentability, patent invalidity, non-infringement and freedom to operate issues.  He also has experience with design patent preparation and prosecution, and has represented clients in inter partes review proceedings at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.  

Richard regularly speaks on aspects of chemistry and patent law at the American Chemical Society’s national meetings, and is a member of the society’s committee on patents and related matters, and the chemistry-and-the-law division’s executive committee.  He has also taught with the Patent Resources Group and the Practicing Law Institute, and has been a frequent speaker and panelist on aspects of ethics in patent prosecution.  

Richard earned his juris doctorate degree at the Santa Clara University School of Law, where he was an editorial board member of the Santa Clara University Law Review.  He obtained his PhD in theoretical/computational chemistry, and his bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, U.K.
