Rebecca Matthias is the Assistant General Counsel and Director of Privacy at VMware (the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, delivering solutions to over 99% of Fortune 1000 and 97% of Fortune Global 500 companies).  Rebecca leads VMware’s global privacy team and is responsible for developing and administering VMware’s privacy program and practices.  Recent initiatives have involved supporting VMware’s cloud offerings for US and EU rollout.  Prior to joining VMware, Rebecca handled compliance matters, including privacy, for VeriSign, Inc.  She also worked for VeriSign as a product attorney for both the SSL and Registry divisions, advising on marketing and product development.  Before moving in-house, Rebecca was a senior associate for Coudert Brothers in Kazakhstan, Russia, London and Washington, D.C.  At Coudert Brothers she provided advice on international corporate transactional, IP, compliance and telecoms matters. 

Rebecca received her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law, where she was on the Editorial Board of the Virginia Journal of International Law.  She earned her B.A. in Russian Studies from the University of Virginia, and was awarded Phi Beta Kappa.

Rebecca has been CIPP/US certified since 2006, and has also earned the CIPP/IT and CIPP/E certifications.  She regularly speaks on privacy and related security matters, most recently at the 2014 RSA Conference.
